Have you been curious to find out how your information is used without you knowing? How about the magical way that on different devices, an item you just looked up will pop up as an advertisement? Do you use the cloud to keep your information secure? Are you engaging with many streaming services such as Netflix and Spotify without thinking deeper into what they do with your information and what these services show about our society? These are just a few of the questions that our group dug deeper into. Our group’s page will provide you with a lot of information that covers many topics in order to help you answer all of these questions and more. In addition, our findings may raise more questions for you. We have included a list of sources that we found helpful on our research in the references section.

Surveillance and streaming are topics that most of us know exist, but few of us are knowledgeable about the inner-workings of them and what they mean in today’s digital culture. Our group has spent the whole fall semester at Gettysburg college studying surveillance and streaming.

In the immersion and reflection section, we have provided you with multiple perspectives on how different aspects of surveillance and streaming have impacted our lives. If any of the questions posed above seem particularly interesting to you, we encourage you to check out the individual pages for each group member. One focuses more closely on the way that surveillance and tracking works and a more general overview. Another page focuses more on the cloud, what it is, benefits and consequences and how that ties into surveillance and privacy. The third page goes into more detail on streaming services, how they work, and how they have changed the way we interact with media.

Our society is becoming increasingly digital as time progresses and it is important that you understand the possible negative (and positive) implications of topics such as surveillance, tracking, the cloud and streaming services. Being more aware as a digital consumer will help you in the long run, and we want to give you the necessary information to be an informed user of the digital world.
